Prominent American venture capitalists and entrepreneurs have been targeting Singapore as the next Silicon Valley. This should come as no surprise since the country has in recent years become an extremely popular destination for companies and multinationals thanks to how easy it is to do business there – both because it is the gateway to the rest of Asia and because it also has English as the first language. This interest has grown in the last couple of years though as incubator funds, internet start-ups and other assorted hi-tech groups have targeted it thanks to the tech-savvy atmosphere and entrepreneurial spirit.

The most recent arrival in Singapore is the $10 million incubator fund from GGV (Golden Gate Ventures) which has declared an aim of building partnerships between Asia and Silicon Valley. They hope to do this by sending the highest performing Asian entrepreneurs to the States in order for them to work with some of the leading start-up companies in Silicon Valley.

Vinnie Laure, a venture capitalist from GGV noted of the move:

“I see a lot of opportunity here. Silicon Valley is Silicon Valley. But in this region there are a lot of new tech start-ups coming who are going to do really well and we want to be a part of that.”

There are already plans in place to move well-known entrepreneurs and mentors from Asia over to the Valley to work with companies such as YouTune, MySpace and BitTorrent, with other companies coming on board every day. Golden Gate Ventures are also intending to target some other Asian markets like Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Nevertheless, Singapore is currently the most attractive since it is ranked as top place in the world for being the easiest place to both start a business and do business by the World Bank. That is why it currently seems to be the de facto place for investment in the region.

With the world of mobile phone technology constantly improving, it is only logical that 2011 has been the best year for smartphones thus far. This year has seen the release of some truly ground-breaking phones, which have redefined the world of mobile communication and media as we know it. Now, although RIM have had a great reputation in the past for their corporate handsets, they’ve been in a bit of rut until recently. Their Blackberry phones have had a great deal of success, but the company has never greatly diverged from their initial design. 2011 marked the first real innovation to the Blackberry line with the release of the Blackberry Bold 9900, which takes new steps both technologically and aesthetically.

The touch screen is capacitive and high resolution, responding quickly to your requests. The brand new operating system for the phone, the OS 7, shows how ready RIM are to take things to the next level with their phones. The Bold does, however, still work within many of the existing Blackberry boundaries: it’s not a great device for web browsing or multimedia, but is catered towards messaging and social networking. The chassis for the phone is pleasantly solid, and Blackberry’s signature QWERTY keyboard as easy to use as ever. The internet capability is slightly smoother and faster although nothing compared to leading smartphones, and the camera has been improved as well.

If you’re already an established fan of Blackberry mobile phones, the Bold is the next step in the development of this type of smart phone and should be an exciting improvement whilst the controls remain familiar. Although unlikely to inspire any new converts, the Bold is an important entry in 2011’s smartphone list because it marks a departure from RIM’s original formula towards a more competitive, capable mobile device.
